Tips for finding a family-friendly martial arts school
- The best way to find a martial arts school is through a referral. Do you know anyone with a kid in a martial arts school? Ask them about their experience.
- Your second-best option is to read Google reviews. Try to find a school with more than a couple dozen reviews so as to ensure they are genuine, and not just written by the owners and their friends!
- Choose a school that explicitly states its commitment to developing well-rounded children. Training children in martial arts requires expertise and a high level of responsibility.
- If you’re still concerned, ask to sit in on a class. Most schools will be ok with you sitting on the sidelines to get a feel for the lesson and teaching style.
- Once your child has started training, watch for changes in their behavior and attitudes over time. Are they more respectful or less? Do they lash out more often or less frequently? Of course, there could be other reasons for changes in your child’s behavior (adolescence being what it is) but it is something to consider if you have concerns about the school your child has enrolled in.
