Mormon Involvement in Las Vegas
With Ageless Martial Arts
As a martial arts instructor I am always learning new things and exposing the martial arts in Las Vegas as a great way for the community to come together. This weekend I actually had the pleasure of teaching some basic self defense at the church of the LDS. ( Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). It interesting to note that there are so many people involved in different types of religion in the valley. But more importantly, it always good to come as a community together so people can enjoy something that can help them grow.
This is to say that though, teaching martial arts for 15 minutes, isn’t exactly recommended because you should have a practice of training and concepts of how to defend yourself and always practice and train to make your training effective.
Mormon Church Las Vegas
Its pretty cool to see some good people do some other activities’ in the church. Though I was teaching martial arts in Las Vegas. I was happy to see one of my black belts Sensei Robert Taylor participate in making some cupcakes. The LDS People had some fun creating bakery cupcakes for the ward activity that night and we had some good fun. Though, its not exactly a warriors code, sometimes its good for our Black belts just to participate in the community and do some things to show others we are a community based martial arts school.
Being in the community its important to be part of something outside of your niche. Its always important to do other things that are not just about yourself but about others and seeing other points viewpoints. Sometimes being outside of the dojo and always training and learning how to fight everyday, it was interesting to see how others lived their lives outside of the martial arts. For me, I have been in a dojo for nearly 24 years, so seeing people do everyday things I take for granted like making cupcakes on a Saturday night can be weird and odd, but it makes me realize how different it is outside of my dojo.
Martial Arts Near Las Vegas
As a karate school our goal is to let the community aware of our classes so we can help more people use martial arts as a stepping tool to help adults learning self defense and get them to challenge themselves in a healthy environment.
Teaching martial arts in a community setting can benefit individuals and the community as a whole in several ways:
- Promotion of Physical Fitness: Martial arts offer a comprehensive workout, promoting cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and coordination. Regular training can help community members stay active and healthy.
- Self-defense Skills: One of the primary purposes of many martial arts is to teach self-defense. In communities where safety might be a concern, these skills can empower individuals, making them feel more secure and confident.
- Building Discipline and Focus: The structured nature of martial arts training instills discipline and focus in practitioners. These qualities can translate to improved performance in school, work, and other activities.
- Mental Health Benefits: Engaging in physical activity, including martial arts, releases endorphins which can reduce stress and improve mood. Moreover, the meditative aspects of many martial arts can help with mindfulness and anxiety reduction.
- Community Cohesion: When taught in a community setting, martial arts can act as a binding force, fostering camaraderie and building relationships among diverse group members.
- Teaching Respect: Martial arts training emphasizes respect — for the instructor, for fellow students, and for oneself. This can cultivate an environment of mutual respect within the community.
- Boosting Self-confidence: Mastering new techniques, advancing in rank, and achieving personal goals in martial arts can significantly enhance an individual’s self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Providing Positive Role Models: Instructors and advanced students can act as role models for younger or newer community members, guiding them not just in martial arts, but also in life lessons and values.
- Reduction in Anti-social Behavior: Engaging youth and adults in productive activities like martial arts can deter them from harmful behaviors or activities. It provides a positive outlet for energy and aggression.
- Affordability: Community-centered martial arts programs may be more affordable than private schools or academies, making them accessible to a broader range of individuals, including those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn.
- Cultural Awareness: Many martial arts have cultural roots in specific countries or regions. Teaching them can also introduce community members to new cultures, philosophies, and traditions.
In essence, martial arts taught in a community setting not only offer individual benefits but can significantly contribute to the well-being, cohesion, and growth of the community as a whole.

Final Thoughts as a Sensei by Lorenzo Sandoval
Its imperative to note, that as a martial arts instructor, times are changing and people are well aware that martial arts has become more common in todays society. As someone who has seen martial arts it has grown into something that it shared throughout the Las Vegas valley and has helped people not only build themselves by being more confident, but has created community in other sacred locations like a church.
It is beyond a doubt our job to make sure we do our best to create the best classes we can so not only if gives people something to do but creates importance in how we instill life skill values throughout our society as a whole, regardless of the activity.
