Traditional Martial Arts School Vs. MMA Gym
Martial Arts Schools in Las VEgas
What is a Traditional Martial Arts School?
Ass someone who has done martial arts for about 24 years, in my opinion, I would say there are a few components to a traditional school. Here are some recognizable things that most traditional schools do so they tend to differentiate from a Fight Gym or a MMA Gym. Here are some traits that a tradtional school has through its operation and cultural differences.
- Has a Belt Ranking System
- Wears Uniforms Typically a Gi or a Dobak
- Has a cultural attachment to traditions
- Has organized curriculum in the school that it taught to everyone
- Has History of a style
- Has a differentiation of the style of martial art that they do
- The tittle given to the instructor has a ranking
- They have a terms such as Black Belt etc.
- More family based focusing on the younger kids.
What is a MMA Gym or Fight Club?
So when we see this in a MMA a gym and or a MMA fight club, how can we understand what makes them different and why that is important and the advantages and disadvantages of being in both styles of training. What makes it different than a traditional martial ats school?
- They primarily focus on fighting alot and the sport itself
- The classes’ are versatile and curriculum can switch to one thing to another
- They have different types of instructors
- They dont wear uniforms normally they train with work out clothes
- It tends to attract an older group of people
- The group of people is much different. Less family oriented and more focused on the sport itself
- They tend to have really good people in shape
- Really tough guys most of time, sparring them can be rough, but if you become part of the group you will learn much about brother hood and working hard.
- They are always fighting full contact and the contact is real.
What is Better, An MMA Gym or Traditional School?
This is a very divided questions and for several reasons. Times have changed and MMA as well as traditional schools are always changing. I feel like it really depends on your preference. The great thing about traditional school that it can have structure and kids life skills. Have that goal oriented mindset that traditional mindset. The majority of the time, because of the market and how traditional martial arts school market to most families they tend to create a culture and curriculum that revolves around that. Now, this isnt for every single martial art. But in my experience its been dependent on the school.
With MMA I have seen kids programs, but the consistent problem they always run, is that they a have no kids curriculum and often times the inconsistency of not having the same instructor therefore developing that relationship.
Just Train just get a good Work out
being born and raised in Las Vegas myself, I find that MMA gyms only want to focus on the work out most of the time to its regular members. While there is no problem with this, burning a sweat and working hard can be good. But attaining a goal is part of the traditional martial arts.
